in other news, i attended a little halloweenie fete and dressed as my interpretation of marilyn monroe's spirit. really, i just wanted to try my hand at some sugar-skull/muertos makeup, which was fun...but alas, i'm so blind w/out my glasses that it was hard to really get any detail into the makeup. in fact, i had to break off the end of my one crappy makeup brushes just so i could get 3 inches from the mirror to see what i was doing. c'est la vie, though, right? i think it turned out well.
anyway, in less light-hearted news, i'm pissed. i'm sick of re-sellers on etsy and my anger sort of came to a head yesterday when regretsy posted this. there's a few sellers in particular on etsy that i KNOW are re-sellers....buying their junky shit from wholesalers and selling it as if they designed and made it with their own hands. i've been flagging their crap for years now and etsy lets it fly. i send etsy LINKS TO THE WHOLESALE WEBSITES that sell the same items being sold in these etsy shops and yet these sellers continue to make a living off of it. meanwhile, i, and many other REAL ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS struggle to eke out a living by grinding our fingers down into dirty little nubs by sewing, soldering, and WORKING to produce our wares. i have stained, peeling fingers, i have arthritis in my knuckles, i have aching wrists from ACTUALLY PRODUCING THE GOODS I SELL. and since my sales are down 75% from what they were a year ago on etsy (i blame the influx of resellers and plain ol' junk on etsy that has created a sea in which my items get lost in) i schlepp all my goods to the farmer's market at 8am every saturday morning just to make enough cash to buy groceries for the week. i'm drowning, i tell you.
no matter what, i'mma keep doin' what i'm doin'....keep making and recycling and schlepping. i'll earn my honest, albeit meager, living by keeping it real and working as sustainably as i can. one of these days the real artists will prevail.

Thanks for talking about this Katinka...it's been a sticker in my rump for awhile too. It's very very disheartening that we're getting a giant knife in the back. I'm sort of a turn the other cheek type of girl myself but there's a point when you gotta eat or be eaten so to speak.
You´re so right Katinka. I´m actually thinking about dropping my etsy shop and concentrate on my European based DaWanda and NotMassProduced shops, as I can´t compete with the dumping prices of many (re)sellers at all, living in the most expensive country in Europe!
I´m shocked to hear that your sales have dropped so much, I´m sorry to hear that. I´ve given up on the idea to live of my handcrafted things as life here is so expensive, but balancing my textile work and a part-time day job puts a lot of strain on me and I would love to be able to concentrate on my craftwork :-(
Love your Marilyn outfit and girl, you need to get yourself some contactlenses!!! Perfect for occasions like that! I´m VERY short-sighted myself and wouldn´t be able to put ANY make up on without my lenses,(or look like a scarecrow)haha!
And... why on earth don´t you want to show your legs??? They look very nice to me! Nothing against leggings though, I love them myself.
Take care, hope your shows go well and make up for some of the loss from your etsy sales.
I adored your make up and glasses together. It is beautifully striking! I really want the pill necklace too! That would be quite the conversation starter.
I am sad to have to agree with you on Etsy. I may not have made a killing, but I used to actually make some money here and there, enough to fund the purchasing from Etsy artists. Now you have to be a freaking Private Detective before you buy anything to make sure you aren't funding a reseller.
I actually had a massive 40% off sale the entire month of October in hopes that it would help me raise money for new studio floors I desperately need. I had ZERO sales so I don't get new floors :(
yay for girlie show! I'm going to hitch up my wagon and head down there saturday...hope some katinka fabulousness is still there when I get there! I think you'll like OKC. And there are plenty of ink covered Okies ;)
I'm not etsy's biggest fan either. They dont seem particularly interested in helping their sellers or protecting them. I came to the conclusion that they're more interested in appearing hip and cool and putting together interviews and treasuries of the same old people than really doing the nuts and bolts of good business. But whatever ;) they didnt ask me my advice.... ;)
see you soon!!
I had no idea this was such a problem. I do my best to avoid things made in sweat shops and was really glad to find a place where those things couldn't infiltrate. I only have 8 items in my shop because it takes me so long to find the time to create and money for supplies. I wondered why it was taking so long for anything in my shop to sell and now I don't feel so bad. Thank you for opening my eyes. I am glad to be on the side of good and not greedy crappy evil.
Great Marilyn costume!
Good luck at the Girlie Show! I have heard about your art from my good friend, Heather of Audrey Eclectic. Love the necklace you made for her. The show is really neat. Unfortunately, I can't make it this year. Have fun!
I have found it impossible to sell on Etsy! I agree with your comments about it.
bleh...that is horrible about the resellers, I had no idea about it!
Love the makeup and best of luck!
Hey lady! Have a safe and great trip to OKC and I think you are 100% right about Etsy. After a year and only 1 sale, I think I am just going to try to get into galleries instead. It makes more sense, after all.....happy OK'ing!
how i love your world.
